Games

Towards the end of 2008, we added board games and card games to our repertoire: mostly designer games which, like books, feature the name of the author (designer) prominently on the box. We have so many board games in stock now that they're spreading down the book aisles and all around the store!

Designer games are a broad class of games that generally have simple rules, short to medium playing times, high levels of player interaction, and attractive physical components. The games emphasize strategy while downplaying luck and conflict. Other terms used to describe this type of game include: "German-style game", "Eurogame", "family strategy game" and "hobby game." Shorter, lighter games in this class are known as "gateway games", whereas longer, heavier games are known as "gamers' games." [source: wikipedia]

You'll find a variety of games for all ages at our store, including boardgames, card games, roleplaying games, playing cards, and dice. Some of the game companies whose games we carry include:Our ever-growing games section

Here's a sampling of games we almost always have in stock:

Our online store will give you a better idea of our stock, though it is not complete. Feel free to call us to check stock anytime. Or better yet, drop by and browse our selection in person. We'll even teach you how to play.

Roleplaying Games

Here Be Books & Games stocks a variety of roleplaying games, modules, books, dice, and accessories. When you're in the store, take a peek in the drawers in the bottom of the Roleplaying Game bookcase. They contain lots of new and ancient treasures. You never know what you'll find. Have a question? Ask Tim, he's been an avid RPG collector for many, many years.

You can, of course, trade in roleplaying games, modules, etc. for premium store credit, then use said credit towards books, games, RPGs, and more.

Dice

From traditional cubical six-siders to the polyhedral dice used in roleplaying games, we've got 'em. Buy 'em individually or in sets. Don't forget a bag to put them in.

In addition to the usual plastic dice, we also have Dwarven Stones, dice made out of gemstones like hematite and agate, and Dwarven Metal Dice made of simulated brass, copper, and brushed steel. Selection varies, but let us know if there's something you're looking for in particular. We can always order it.

Playing Cards

Kaiser Imperial Luxury playing card decks by PiatnikTina fell in love with playing cards at an early age and has been acquiring interesting decks for quite some time. So, of course, our stock includes a variety of unique, high-quality playing cards. Tina's favorites are the Luxury Playing Card decks with non-traditional court cards featuring characters of royalty in period costumes. Plastic playing cards, cards with artistic backs, large-index cards, patience decks, themed playing cards and Euchre cards round out our offerings. Here are pictures of just a few of the decks on hand at Here Be Books & Games:

Tarot Cards & Parapsychology Books

Tarot cards are often hard to come by here in the South. These beautiful decks of pictorial cards are well-known in the States for their use in divining, but they're often used in Europe for popular card games as well. We carry a variety of decks by Piatnik, U.S. Game Systems, and Llewellyn. If you have an interest in the divinatory arts or just like pretty cards, come in and check out our selection.

We've also expanded our selection of parapsychology and metaphysics books to include new books, as well as used - particularly those published by Llewellyn.

Book & Game Requests

We get new inventory in every day. Because of this ever-changing stock, we currently do not list our entire inventory online. However, you can always give us a call or come by the store to let us know what you’re looking for. Our inventory is computerized, so we can usually check to see if it's in stock quickly. If we don’t have the book or game in stock, we offer two services to help you acquire it, even books that are out of print and games that haven't been released yet.

Want Lists for Books

Just tell us what book you want and give us your phone number. We'll add the book to your Want List. When we get a copy in, we'll give you a call. There is no obligation to buy the book when it comes in. Just let us know if you no longer need it. We can't promise when we'll receive a book on your want list, if ever. It could come in in a few days, a few months, or never.

Search Service (Books and Games)

Can't find a book? We can perform a search for FREE!We can almost always find a book somewhere and order it for you. So, if there's something in particular you really want, even if it's out of print, let us help. Searches are always free, but we won't usually offer to do this on the phone unless you ask because of how time-consuming a search can be, especially for obscure titles. We'll let you know how much the book will cost, including shipping to our store, and you can decide whether you want us to special order it for you or not. There is no obligation to order a book if we perform a search.

We deal with a two major game distributors and a variety of game publishers, including a few independents, so we can often find most in-print games for you. Just let Tina know what you're looking for. She'll look up the availability and cost. We can add it to our next game order. If it's a game we don't usually stock, we'll require you to pre-pay for it. If you need something right away, don't be afraid to ask. We'll do our best to accommodate you.

Special Orders & Preorders

If you want us to special order or pre-order a book or game for you, please come into our store. We don't mind doing stock checks over the phone. However, special orders and searches for out-of-print books and designer games can be quite time consuming, so we prefer you to come in, in-person, to request this service. That way we know you're serious. We require at least a 50% deposit on all special orders.

We can usually order new books for you at retail price. Used and out-of-print books cost a minimum of $8.00 (1¢ book + $3.99 shipping + $4 finder's fee). Not all books can be had for a penny, however. Our price for special orders of used and out-of-print books is determined as follows: cost of book + shipping + finder's fee ($4 or 20% of the book's price, whichever is greater). In-print games usually cost MSRP (manufacturer's suggested retail price).

Used books usually arrive within 2 weeks; new books within a few days.

When you special order a game we don't have in stock, we'll usually add it to the next order we place with one of our distributors. If you need it sooner, don't be afraid to ask. Tina will do her best to accommodate you. If it's a game we don't usually stock, we'll require you to pre-pay for it. In-print games usually arrive 2 to 3 days after we place the order with a distributor. Pre-orders usually arrive here on their street date, which is determined by the book or game publisher.

Trade Service

We do accept books and designer games in exchange for trade credit. Trade credit can be used towards the purchase of other books and games in our store. Trade credit can be applied only to half of your purchase, you'll have to pay the other half with cash, check, credit card or debit card. Please see our Trade Policy for complete details.

We've always got a stock of bookmarks for sale, and usually some freebies, too. So you can save your place without dog-earing the page.

As booklovers ourselves, we know the importance of protecting the covers of treasured books. So we carry archival-quality dust jacket covers by Brodart, the leading company in library supplies and book preservation products. You can bring books in to have covers installed or buy a cover when you purchase a book: only $2/each installed.
