First Saturday of Every Month : Game Night at Here Be Books & Games

Game Night at Here Be Books & GamesHere Be Books & Games has been hosting Game Nights the first Saturday of every month, including holidays, since October 2007 (possibly July 2007). The fun starts at 6:00 p.m. and usually runs until after midnight. We have been known to be here until 3:30 a.m. playing games! A new tradition for the die-hards who stay until we run out of steam is to seek nourishment and refreshment at IHOP after we close. We usually take a light game to play while we wait for our food.

Weekly September 20 thru December 3, 2011: Learn to Play the Designer Game of the Week

PRESS RELEASE: Store Owners Increase Awareness of Designer Board Games
10 Games Will Be Given Away to Lucky Participants

view schedule | read article in Summerville Journal Scene | download article | download schedule

Summerville, SC - September 8, 2011 - Here Be Books & Games in Summerville today announced their intention to introduce the community to modern designer board games. They’re called Designer Games for acknowledging the name of the game designer on the cover, like the author of a book.

Thousands of new Designer Games are published every year in the United States and Europe, but few Americans are even aware that they exist. To increase awareness, the store owners, Tina & Tim McDuffie of Goose Creek, will teach visitors to the store a different award-winning Designer Game each week from September 20 through December 3, 2011.

Games to be featured in these weekly events include award-winning: Tsuro, Got 'Em!, Dixit Odyssey, Thunderstone, Ticket to Ride, Pirate Fluxx, Carcassonne, Zombies!!!, Telestrations, Forbidden Island and The Settlers of Catan. A variety of children's games by HABA will make an appearance in December, just in time for the holidays.

The Game of the Week will be set up on a table in the front of the store so visitors can watch a demo, learn how to play, or even sit down and actually play the game. Four tournaments will be held during the store’s monthly Game Nights: October 1, November 5 and December 3. To encourage participation, the McDuffies will be giving away one game a week to a lucky participant of each week's gaming lessons.

About Designer Games

Designer Games have a definite theme: a lot of attention is paid to the artwork and other components, which are more often made of wood than plastic.  The games tend to emphasize player interaction or cooperation so players are engaged all the time instead of just waiting for their turn.

In a Designer Game, players are rarely eliminated. Any randomness or luck from dice rolls or card draws are offset by having the player decide what to do after a random event happens, rather than before. This allows players to make more interesting decisions utilizing tactics and strategy. Competition over resources - like the wood, wool, wheat, clay and ore in Catan - is common in Designer Games. There are often multiple paths to victory.

Designer Games have been created for all age groups, with a variety of playing times, and supporting different numbers of players. Many can be learned in just a few minutes. The themes run the gamut.

About Here Be Books & Games

Tina & Tim McDuffie are the sole traders of Designer Games in Summerville, SC. Their book and game store, Here Be Books & Games, at 4650 Ladson Road, Suite I is open Tuesday thru Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Founded in 2005, the store has been hosting monthly Game Nights since 2007.

Dixit Odyssey

Telestrations
In Dixit, each turn one player is the storyteller, who secretly chooses a card from his hand and says a word or sentence to describe it. The other players give the storyteller a card from their hand that matches. The storyteller lays out the cards and the other players vote for the card they think is the storyteller’s. If no one or everyone guesses correctly, the storyteller receives 0 points. Players also score for correct guesses and votes received. 2010 Spiel Des Jahres Winner.

In Telestrations, all players sketch a word, then pass their sketch to the next player. Players guess what's been drawn, then pass their guess to the next player who must try to draw the word they see… The revelations of each word’s evolution are the true fun of this award-winning game. 2010 Golden Geek Best Party Game.

However, to kick off what I hope will become a regular thing, we'll stick to Double Deck Pinochle, Cribbage and maybe Euchre for the first run on Thursday, August 25 from 6 pm to 9 pm. Reservations are necessary for this event. Please RSVP by phone to Tina at (843) 695-1498. Admission is FREE.

I'll be looking for lots of feedback, including:

Please contact Tina with your comments or post them on our Facebook Wall. We want to know what you think, even if you won't be able to attend our first Card Night. Other nights are being considered.

Roll the Dice (June 22, 2011)
I'll bet most of the games you grew up with included two six-sided dice. That's nice. Dice add randomness and chance, which is why they are often absent from most designer games. Luckily for those of us who like to roll the dice, there are designer games that make good use of dice - though they may not be the dice you're used to playing with. Here are a few of the games we have slotted for Roll the Dice: Lords of Vegas, Dice Town, Ra: The Dice Game, Roll Through the Ages, Zombie Dice, Catan: The Dice Game, Carcassonne: The Dice Game, Ticket to Ride with the Dice Expansion, Stone Age, SET Cubed, and old-fashioned Six-Dice.
Anything Goes (June 15, 2011)

Fridays, June 18 thru August 6, 2010 : Friday Afternoon Games at Here Be Books & Games

Summer is here. What better way to while away the hot afternoon hours than playing board games in air conditioned comfort? So, to help you have fun and stay cool this summer, we’re resuming Afternoon Games at Here Be Books & Games. Admission is FREE. Come by yourself* or bring a friend or two along. Adults and kids 10 and up are welcome. (*Kids under 15 must be accompanied by an adult.) You don’t have to already know the games in order to join in on the fun. We’ll teach you how to play!

Each week we'll feature a different theme. Here are the themes of past Summer Game Days:

Train Game Junction (Friday, June 11, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.)
Train Game Junction, how's that function? We're hooking up routes and making 'em function... The games fitting this theme all involve trains, of course. In Ticket to Ride and its many expansions and spin-offs, players claim routes and place their trains to complete tickets. In TransAmerica and TransEuropa, players lay track to connect their 5 cities across the map as quickly as possible. We've also got two card games involving trains that may hit the table: Express and Ticket to Ride: The Card Game.
Flavors of Fluxx (Friday, June 18, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.)
There are almost as many flavors of Fluxx as there are ice cream flavors, including: Martian Fluxx, Zombie Fluxx, Monty Python Fluxx, Family Fluxx, EcoFluxx and plain old ordinary Fluxx. Fluxx is the hilarious card game of everchanging rules. The game begins with two simple rules - Draw One, Play One - and no way to win. However, as players play their cards, the rules change. Before you know it, you're drawing 5 cards, playing 2 and just when the Goal was in sight, someone changed that, too!

Dice Are Nice (Friday, July 30, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.)
Here are a few of the games we have slotted for our Dice Are Nice Game Day: Dice Town, Ra: The Dice Game, Roll Through the Ages, Zombie Dice, Cthulhu Dice, and old-fashioned Six-Dice.
Ancient History (Friday, August 6, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.)
Build a temple for Cleopatra. Produce a grand spectacle in the Roman Colosseum for Ceasar. It's all ancient history or is it? Learn to play: Stone Age, Cleopatra, Colosseum, Ra, Ra: The Dice Game, Roll Through the Ages, Nanuk, Beowulf: The Legend, Tribune, Nomads of Arabia, Primordial Soup, Catan Histories: Struggle for Rome, and Settlers of the Stone Age.
