Frequently Asked Questions About Game Night

What kinds of games do you play?
Playing a game of Defenders of the Realm during Game Night at Here Be Books & Games
We play a large variety of games, mostly Euros. No two Game Nights are the same. At right is a sampling of games we've played recently at the store. You can also view our entire play list at BoardGameGeek.. We've been tracking our plays on Board Game Geek (an awesome site, by the way) since March 1, 2009. Though we occassionally forget to post our day-to-day plays, we always post Game Night plays. [view stats of Game Nights Past]
Can I bring my own games to play?
Certainly. If you have a favorite game you'd like to play, bring it with you. We love to learn new games.
Do you have games there?
Yes. We have a large selection of demo games. We've invested quite a bit of money into our game library, so you can literally Try Before You Buy. We'll even teach you how to play!
What if I don't know how to play a particular game or just don't know how to play many games at all?
No problem. We'll teach you how to play. I usually learn at least one new game every Game Night. There are just so many wonderful games in the world, it's hard to know how to play them all. Plus, new ones are coming out all the time. The object of Game Night is to have fun. We could all use a little more fun in our lives. Best of all, it's FREE!
Do you have beverages or should I bring my own?
We always stock a variety of non-alcoholic drinks that you can purchase at the store, including: regular and diet sodas and bottled water. If there's something in particular you'd like us to carry, let us know. All drinks must be in reclosable containers (like bottles with screw tops) to reduce spills and they may not contain alcohol.
How much is admission?
Admission is FREE.
What ages can attend Game Night?
Most Game Night attendees are ages 15 through adult. Younger children are welcome as long as you supervise them. We have many games designed specifically for the younger set. Just ask Tina for suggestions.
What should I bring?
If you have a folding chair, please bring it with you. While we do have quite a few, on busy Game Nights, we sometimes run out. We can always use one additional card table: we have two as well as several 6' tables, but a third always comes in handy. Don't forget to bring any games that you particularly want to play. While our demo game library is quite extensive, we don't have everything.
Do you only play games on the first Saturday of the month?
Oh, no. We play games much more frequently than that. We try to take a break most afternoons, about four o'clock, and try something new or play an old favorite. We love to teach people how to play, too. So if there's something you want to learn, just ask us. Of course, you're welcome to drop by just about anytime and see if we're up for a game.
Any special rules?
Yes.
  • Have fun.
  • Handle the games with care. They're expensive. For example, don't leave boxes on the floor where they can be stepped on. Try not to bend the cards, put everything back the way you found it... Some of the games you'll play at Game Night are our personal copies or those of other attendees. Please treat them with care.
  • Sign in and make sure the games you play are entered in the book. The Guest Book is usually on the counter or floating around. Please sign in as soon as you get here. As you play games, make sure someone from the group you play with, enters the game's name on the Games Played page for that Game Night. You don't have to note who played it, just that it was played. If you play a game multiple times, add a x2 or whatever number is appropriate after the game's name. We track attendance and post our plays on Board Game Geek. We don't post your name anywhere, it just stays in our Guest Book for our own records.
  • Pick up after yourself. Don't leave trash on the floor, bookcases, counter, etc.

We'll also teach you how to play Catan's many offshoots, including: Catan Geographies: Germany, Settlers of the Stone Age, Catan Histories: Struggle for Rome, and Catan: The Dice Game. We'll also introduce you to the famous tile-laying game, Carcassonne, some of its numerous expansions, and a few offshoots, New World, Carcassonne: The Dice Game, and Carcassonne: The City.

Learn to play: Star Trek: Expeditions, The Three Musketeers: The Queen's Pendants, Pandemic, Pandemic: On the Brink, Incredibles Pandemic, Castle Panic, Forbidden Island, Ghost Stories, Battlestar Gallactica, Defenders of the Realm, Shadows Over Camelot, Onirim, and Red November.
Ancient History

Learn to play: 7 Wonders, Cleopatra, Stone Age, Egizia, Colosseum, Ra, Ra: The Dice Game, Roll Through the Ages, Nanuk, Beowulf: The Legend, Tribune, Primordial Soup, Catan Histories: Struggle for Rome, and Settlers of the Stone Age.
Roll the Dice
I'll bet most of the games you grew up with included two six-sided dice. That's nice. Dice add randomness and chance, which is why they are often absent from most designer games. Luckily for those of us who like to roll the dice, there are designer games that make good use of dice - though they may not be the dice you're used to playing with. Here are a few of the games we have slotted for Roll the Dice: Lords of Vegas, Dice Town, Ra: The Dice Game, Roll Through the Ages, Zombie Dice, Catan: The Dice Game, Carcassonne: The Dice Game, Ticket to Ride with the Dice Expansion, Stone Age, SET Cubed, and old-fashioned Six-Dice.
Life's a Party
Learn more about your friends and acquaintances, laugh over your drawing skills or lack thereof, and giggle all day long. Learn to play: Truth Be Told, Telestrations, Dixit and Dixit 2, Cyrano, Time's Up, 6 nimmt!, 11 nimmt! and Good Question!
It's a Mystery
Crack the code, put your detective skills to work and figure out whodunit, and please expose the traitor. Learn to play: Telepathy, Mystery Rummy: Jack the Ripper, Bang!, Saboteur, Code 777, Shadows Over Camelot, Shadow Hunters, Mystery of the Abbey, Mystery Express, Mr. Jack, Mr. Jack in New York, and Fury of Dracula.
Life's a Puzzle
Rearrange the stars in the sky to summon an Old One, make words out of a jumble of letters, deduce your opponent's code before she guesses yours. Learn to play: Stars Are Right, Bananagrams, Telepathy, SET, Quiddler, Shear Panic, Qwirkle, SET Cubed, Code 777, Mr. Jack, and more.
Farmer in the Dell
Think of all the critters you can find on a farm... and the crops you can raise! Learn to play: Animal Upon Animal, Zoowaboo, Hey That's My Fish!, Bohananza, If Wishes Were Fishes, Finca, Shear Panic, Filipino Fruit Market, Hive, 6 nimmt!, 11 nimmt!, Pickomino, Gloria Pictoria, Zooloretto, and Frank's Zoo. If you're seeking heftier fare, we'll teach you how to play: Darjeeling, Ladybohn, Puerto Rico, and Agricola.
Dungeon Delve
Take a trip into fantasy: explore musty dungeons, kill the monsters, and take home the treasure. Learn to play: Castle Ravenloft, Cutthroat Caverns, Shadow Hunters, Thunderstone and its many expansions, Claustrophobia, Dungeon Twister, Munchkin, Munchkin Cthulhu, Dungeon Lords, Castle Panic, Bridge Troll, Cave Troll, Prophecy, etc.
Train Game Junction
Train Game Junction, how's that function? We're hooking up routes and making 'em function so this includes trains, planes and automobiles. Learn to play: Airlines Europe, Ticket to Ride and its many spin-offs, TransAmerica, Jet Set, Thurn and Taxis, Express, Tsuro, Settlers of Catan, Golden City, Incan Empire, Keltis, Keltis: The Card Game, and Ticket to Ride: The Card Game.
Flavors of Fluxx
There are almost as many flavors of Fluxx as there are ice cream, including: Pirate Fluxx, Martian Fluxx, Zombie Fluxx, Monty Python Fluxx, Family Fluxx, EcoFluxx and plain old ordinary Fluxx. Fluxx is the hilarious card game of everchanging rules. The game begins with two simple rules - Draw One, Play One - and no way to win. However, as players play their cards, the rules change. Before you know it, you're drawing 5 cards, playing 2 and just when the Goal was in sight, someone changed that, too!
Munchkin Madness
Bring your Munchkin decks and oodles of expansions for a day of Munchkinly mischievous fun! We do have two versions of Munchkin: Munchkin Cthulhu and the original Munchkin. You might be able to con Tina into cracking open a copy of the brand new Munchkin Zombies!
